It’s time for action to protect our communities, pensions and wages

Workers across Ontario and Canada face unprecedented attacks on their rights. Tim Hudak is trying to make Ontario like the low-wage American states of Michigan and Alabama. Federally, Stephen Harper is backing legislation that would use the Income Tax Act to tie unions’ hands with red tape. This would curtail only unions’ – not employers’ – abilities to do labour relations, legal and political work that is essential to representing and defending members like you and the communities we live and work in. We can’t sit back and let these politicians destroy the social and economic prosperity of workers.

The Society is mobilizing members

The Society, along with many other labour unions and organizations in Ontario and across Canada, has already embraced this campaign. We began slowly with pilot presentations Workers Rights Logo Webto help fine-tune the campaign. At the 2013 Society Council, we rolled out a campaign strategy and built the capacity of Delegates, Unit Directors and Local Vice Presidents to help them lead this campaign. Council also backed a motion to set firm timelines to roll-out this campaign under the leadership of EVP Policy Michelle Johnston and LVP Hydro One Keith Rattai.

Between now and March 31, 2014, each Local will develop and implement its own Local Engagement Plan with the goal of speaking face-to-face with every single member of the Local about this campaign.

Get educated and get involved. You can’t afford not to. For more information, contact your Local Vice President.

Educate yourself, share with others and get involved

The Society and others in the labour movement have created resources to help you learn about the threat to workers and take action. To get involved in this campaign, contact your local leadership.
