The Society is urging all members to attend the Rally for Decent Work at Queens Park on Saturday, October 1 at 12:30PM – festivities get underway at 1pm. You can RSVP now by clicking here.
Co-organized by the Ontario Federation of Labour and the $15 and Fairness Campaign, the rally will call for safe working conditions, decent hours, paid sick days and vacation, access to a union, $15 minimum wage, and an end to the gendered and racialized wage gap.
The rally comes at a key time. The Ontario government is considering, through the Changing Workplaces Review, which direction to take labour and employment law in Ontario. While The Society has made submissions already and will do so again in the next round of consultations, this government has shown it can be swayed by public pressure.
Im going to be at the Rally for Decent Work and I hope to see as many members as possible there, too, said President Scott Travers. This is, to me, the defining issue of a generation. The way people work has changed and we need laws that reflect those changes so workers can be guaranteed at least a decent standard of living.
If we had better labour laws, it wouldnt have taken us over three years of hounding the government to get to a representation vote for Legal Aid lawyers, continued Travers. It should be every workers right to join a union and thats what well be there fighting for on October 1.
