ACTION ALERT: this Day of Action is happening today, April 15, 2016. Members working in downtown Toronto are encouraged to attend the noon rally at the Ministry of Labour offices, 400 University Ave. See below for other events across Ontario.
April 15 is the Ontario Make It Fair Day of Action on labour law reform. Society members are encouraged to take part in events in their communities.
Ontarios employment laws are woefully out of date and out of step with the current jobs market. Laws that govern Collective Bargaining and the organizing of new members have become decidedly skewed against unions and unionized workers, resulting in the slow degradation of union bargaining power and a resulting degradation of our contracts and terms and conditions of work. In non-unionized parts of the labour market, part-time, temporary and contract jobs are becoming the norm, along with erratic scheduling and contract-flipping.
The Ontario government is currently in the process of reviewing all of our employment laws both the Ontario Labour Relations Act that governs relationships between Unions and Employers, as well as the Employment Standards Act that governs all workers and provides non-union workers with their only meagre protections.
We now have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make the changes Ontarians need now and for the future to create a fairer, more equitable economy.
On this Friday April 15th, please help the battle for better labour standards for all of Ontarios workers by attending the local day of action event closest to you. Events are being held in the following communities: Durham, North Bay, Peterborough, Thunder Bay, Guelph, Oakville, Waterloo, Windsor, Hamilton, Ottawa, Sudbury, Toronto, Kingston, Peel, London, and Niagara.
Society members working in downtown Toronto are encouraged to take their lunch break to join the event outside the Ministry of Labour office at 400 University Avenue, which begins at noon.
