Legal Aid Ontario lawyers campaign for recognition of their collective bargaining rights continues to build momentum. This winter, the Association of Justice Counsel called on the Wynne government to recognize Legal Aid lawyers collective bargaining rights. Canadian Civil Liberties Association Executive Director Sukanya Pillay also wrote a letter of support, telling Legal Aid Ontarios CEO, Bob Ward, The Charter (of Rights and Freedoms) grants employees the right to bargain collectively. This complimented a campaign supported by allies in the labour movement to send signed postcards to the provincial government in support of the campaign.
Legal Aid lawyers also signed a historic partnership with the Criminal Lawyers Association. This partnership will see both groups of lawyers working together to advance the interests of their clients through advocacy to government.
